Do you know what I hate hate hate hate? Dissecting books in class. I usually really like the books we read in class (don’t judge). BUTTT. I hate analyzing everything the author writes. SERIOUSLY? The author probably said the guy’s shirt was black because that’s the only clean shirt he had. NOT because it foreshadows his depression to come. Hey, maybe it does mean something more, but I’m not really interested in that. Anyway, when I love a book, I like to enjoy it without having to write three essays about it and whatnot. I mean, it’s interesting to know kind of what the author wanted the reader to find out, but I also think every reader should take from it what they can. Ya know? I just read Flight for my English class… and I really, really liked it. I hope I feel the same way at the end of this semester.

  1. I'm not sure if I agree. In fact, I think you should reconsider this post. The mark of great literature IS that the little things make a point- what's the point of reading aimless rambling and pointless details? In addition, I believe a large portion of your college education is to learn how to think. If you simply “read” books and do not spend time interpreting them and essentially picking them apart- you're really not accomplishing much. So while the papers are tedious, and I hate them too, I would be a much less educated person without having written them!
